Lists by city
Every city with a list, west to east. Each city page shows the top three on every list there.
How a list is ordered
Every list follows the same order, so a list of kitchen renovation companies reads like a list of custom home builders.
- 01Best overall
The strongest firm on the list once rating, review count, services and portfolio are weighed together.
- 02 to 04Best for
Each badge names the kind of project or client the firm suits best.
- 05+Ranked in order
The rest of the list, read from the top.
How every list is built
The same steps in every city, from the first Google Maps search to the facts on each card.
- 01
Searched city by city
Every list starts from Google Maps searches for the trade in the city. The searches returned 2,332 places across 26 cities.
- 02
Filtered before ranking
Closed listings, firms with no website of their own, directories and lead sites, retailers, franchises, suppliers and single-trade shops are set aside first.
- 03
Weighed on four things
Google rating, the number of reviews behind it, how closely the firm's services match the trade, and its portfolio, weighed together.
- 04
Card facts from the firm
The tagline, the facts under “Why it ranks here” and the service chips on a card come from the firm's own website, or its Google listing when the site cannot be read.
Every rating on the site was read from Google in Oct 2026.

Do I need a building permit for my project?
Usually, for structural changes, additions, new plumbing or electrical work, basement finishing and new homes. Cosmetic updates such as new cabinets, counters, flooring and paint usually do not need one. Permits come from your municipality, and many firms apply as part of the job, so agree in writing who does it.
How do I check a contractor's insurance and workers' compensation?
Ask for a certificate of liability insurance that covers the dates of your job, and for a clearance from your province's workers' compensation board (WorkSafeBC, WCB-Alberta, WCB Saskatchewan, WCB Manitoba, the WSIB, WorkSafeNB, WCB Nova Scotia or WorkplaceNL). The clearance confirms the firm is registered and its account is in good standing.
What should a renovation contract include?
The scope of work, a payment schedule tied to stages of the work, start and finish dates, how changes are agreed and priced, who applies for permits, cleanup, and the warranty on the work. Get it signed before any work starts and keep every change in writing.
What is a holdback?
Provincial lien laws let, and in some provinces require, the person paying for construction work to hold back part of each payment for a set period after the work is done. If an unpaid trade or supplier registers a lien against the property, that money has been kept back to answer it. The rules differ by province, so ask your lawyer how holdback works where you live.
Is a new home covered by a warranty?
In British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, new homes must carry warranty coverage set by provincial law, such as the 2-5-10 warranty in British Columbia and Tarion's warranty in Ontario. In Saskatchewan and the Atlantic provinces, warranty programs are voluntary, so ask the builder which program, if any, covers the house.
Is renovation work covered by a warranty?
A renovation is not a new home, so the new home warranty rules usually do not apply: get the firm's own workmanship warranty in writing, with what it covers and for how long. Renovators in RenoMark, the Canadian Home Builders' Association program, offer a minimum two-year warranty on their work.
